Woman, 62, drowns rescuing dog from Long Island river: cops

A Long Island woman drowned Sunday morning while trying to rescue her dog, who had jumped into a local river, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, Katherine Androw, 62, of Babylon, was staying on a houseboat on the Connequat River in Oakdale when her dog suddenly fell into the river around 1:30 a.m.

A few hours later, just after 8 a.m., staff at the Oakdale Yacht Club spotted the woman floating in the river and called 911, police said.

The woman, later identified as Andreu, was pulled from the waters of the six-mile-long river and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The dog, meanwhile, survived and was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment.

Authorities said preliminary evidence indicates Andreou died from drowning, and a formal determination is expected from the Suffolk County coroner’s office.
