Incident Involving Ed Martin and Emily Gabriela Somer
On Thursday, federal authorities arrested Emily Gabriela Somer, charging her with allegedly spitting on Ed Martin during an interview that was captured on video, according to a statement from the District of Columbia US Attorneys’ Office (USAO).
Somer faces a charge of assault, as well as “obstruction of government officials,” as indicated in the press release.
At the time, Martin was representing the District of Columbia, and he has recently been appointed by President Trump to lead a working group at the Department of Justice focused on issues of weaponization amid Senate challenges.
Reports suggest that Somer approached Martin in an aggressive manner during the interview, cursing at him. It appears she confronted him by asking, “Who are you?”
Somer then continued, asking, “Are you Ed Martin?” After departing, she reportedly shouted, “You’re a nasty guy. f*ck you, Ed Martin. My name is Emily Gabriela Somer, and you’re serving.” She allegedly spat on his shoulder while repeating her earlier remarks.
Authorities have also discovered a social media account linked to Somer, which was mentioned in a signed affidavit by federal investigators.
In a statement to the court, investigators noted physical similarities between mug shots of Somer and footage of the incident.
Currently, the former US service is conducting an ongoing investigation into the matter, according to the USAO.
