A woman has been charged with using an anti-Semitic slur close to the site of the Bondi Beach terror attack and is due to appear in court soon.
Police responded to Archer Park on Wednesday after reports surfaced about a confrontation involving a woman and onlookers at that location.
This incident reportedly occurred around 4:30 p.m. while Jewish leaders and players from the Sydney Swans were visiting the memorial for the December attack.
Investigating officers arrested a 67-year-old woman from Bondi, who now faces charges related to offensive language.
According to a statement from NSW Police, she has been given a notice to appear in court.
“Police allege that the woman was verbally abusive toward a group that was making anti-Semitic remarks,” the release indicated.
The event drew condemnation from Alex Rivchin, co-chief executive of the Australian Jewish Executive Council.
Rivchin expressed appreciation for the prompt police action in a statement made on Friday, saying, “I would like to thank the New South Wales Police for their professionalism and swift investigation and prosecution.”
He emphasized that the Jewish community would stand firm against hatred, stating, “We will not succumb to hatred and slander.”
Additionally, he declared, “We will not tolerate the desecration of sacred sites,” insisting that anti-Zionism should not be mistaken for harmless political commentary.
“We cannot turn anti-Semites into good, rational people. But we can punish them when they endanger our society and break our laws.”
The woman is set to appear at Waverley District Court on September 23.
