Woman from Indiana injured by fire on Chicago train, community hopes for her healing

Tragic Incident on Chicago Train

A 26-year-old woman from Chicago, Bethany McGee, is in critical condition following a horrifying attack where she was allegedly set on fire by a repeat offender. Friends and neighbors depicted her as kind and dedicated, noting her close-knit family roots in a small Indiana town.

McGee was known as an enthusiastic reader who excelled in her honors classes in high school, as shared by a former classmate. This classmate remarked on her intelligence and gentle nature. Meanwhile, the community in Upland, Indiana, remains united in keeping her and her family in their thoughts and prayers as they cope with this tragedy.

Local residents expressed their concerns, saying they are praying for McGee’s recovery and emphasizing the family’s need for privacy during such a challenging time. “They are a wonderful family…couldn’t be more loving,” one neighbor noted.

Authorities have identified the accused, 50-year-old Lawrence Reed, as having a long history with the criminal justice system. He was out on bond at the time of the incident, which raises questions about the effectiveness of overseeing such individuals. In August, a judge had ordered him to be monitored electronically after denying a request to keep him in custody following an earlier felony charge.

Despite being under surveillance, Reed reportedly violated curfew and travel restrictions days before the attack took place. The severity of his previous offenses has left the community and the victim’s family grappling with feelings of fear and frustration.

In a recent statement, the White House condemned the incident while criticizing what they termed “liberal crime mitigation policies.” They asserted that a person with such a long criminal history should not have been allowed to roam freely.

According to the criminal complaint, Reed allegedly poured gasoline on McGee while she was quietly reading on the train and attempted to ignite it. The attack occurred at around 9:30 p.m., and McGee’s desperate reaction involved running to escape the flames and inadvertently igniting herself in the process.

McGee’s hometown, a small enclave that houses Taylor University, is known for its close community ties. Neighbors mentioned her upbringing in a loving household, highlighting the support she has from those around her.

An individual, identifying himself as McGee’s brother, declined to comment publicly when approached, indicating the family’s wish for privacy during this harrowing time.
