British Woman Awarded £30,000 After Darth Vader Comparison
A British woman has been awarded approximately £30,000 after her colleagues likened her to Darth Vader from “Star Wars.” Lorna Luke, who works for the NHS Blood and Transplant Service, was reportedly taken aback when a personality test identified her as matching the infamous villain. She claims this comparison impacted her relationships at work and was a contributing factor to her resignation a month later.
The Employment Court in Croydon ruled that the comparison was indeed “disadvantageous,” indicating it adversely affected Ms. Luke. Employment Judge Kathryn Ramsden highlighted that equating someone to a legendary antagonist like Darth Vader is inherently humiliating.
Ms. Luke began her role at the NHS in 2003 and was absent during a team-building exercise that involved a Star Wars-themed personality quiz in 2021. Upon her return, a colleague, Amander Harbor, shared the results, claiming she had the same traits as Darth Vader.
The quiz described the “Darth Vader” personality as someone “highly focused who connects teams.” However, the judge was skeptical of the positive connotations associated with the classification, suggesting it was no surprise that Ms. Luke felt upset after hearing what was said among her colleagues.
The court ultimately dismissed Ms. Luke’s claims that the joke about her being likened to Darth Vader compelled her to leave her job, but she was awarded £28,989.61 in compensation. An NHS spokesperson acknowledged the court’s verdict, emphasizing their commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive environment for all employees.
