Dispute Over Courtesy Leads to Fatal Shooting in Texas

A woman was shot dead in a PetSmart parking lot in Texas following an argument triggered by her not saying “thank you” after someone opened a door for her, according to police reports.

Cecilia Simpson, 41, was shot multiple times outside the Dallas store around 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Witnesses reported that Simpson had held the door for Kiona Zachua Hampton, 22, at a nearby Five Below store, which led to the conflict. It seems that Simpson became frustrated when Hampton didn’t express gratitude, sparking a heated exchange.

After the incident, Simpson and her daughter drove to the PetSmart in the same shopping area. Inside the store, Simpson informed an employee that Hampton was allegedly following them. Hampton then entered the store, initiated an argument with Simpson’s daughter, left for a short while, but returned to confront Simpson again.

When Hampton was escorted out of the store, she reportedly threw a bottle at Simpson’s vehicle while Simpson and her daughter were inside. A physical fight broke out, during which Hampton allegedly brandished a handgun and shot Simpson three times, as outlined by the police.

Hampton was apprehended later that evening during a traffic stop. She reportedly acknowledged the argument with Simpson but maintained that she only drew her weapon when the situation escalated physically.

She has been charged with murder, and as of now, her bail has yet to be determined.

An emergency room nurse, who witnessed the events, recounted her experience. “The woman was insisting, ‘Let’s take this outside. Let’s settle this outside.’ Meanwhile, the mother and daughter were trying to get her to leave,” the nurse described. “They attempted to de-escalate by getting into their car, but she wouldn’t relent. That’s when the fight broke out and the gun was drawn.”

The nurse performed CPR on Simpson before paramedics arrived. “It’s incredibly hard to see a child calling out for their mother, and it sticks with you,” she reflected. “My mom’s been a huge part of my life, especially throughout my nursing career, and this is a loss we all feel deeply.”
