Medical experts are warning of the potential side effects of certain hair treatments after a young woman suffered kidney damage after a salon session.

According to an article published this month in the New England Journal of Medicine, the 26-year-old Tunisian woman suffered three acute kidney injuries between June 2020 and July 2022. The letter to the editor was written by a French doctor who linked certain hair smoothing and straightening products to kidney damage.

The woman in the case study had no previous health problems when she sought medical help. When she consulted her doctor, she was suffering from vomiting, fever, diarrhea, and pain in her back.

“Each episode of acute kidney injury coincided with hair treatments at the same salon on the day symptoms began,” the Journal letter explains.

“The patient complained of a burning sensation during each procedure, followed by scalp ulcers.”

Medical staff tested her and found her blood test to be positive for elevated plasma creatinine levels. Plasma creatinine is a waste product produced by muscles that enters the bloodstream and is filtered by the kidneys.

When the woman went to the salon, the hairdresser applied a cream containing 10% glyoxylic acid to her hair. Researchers believe the chemical is responsible for the kidney damage.

“These results provide evidence that hair straightening creams containing glyoxylic acid are responsible for calcium oxalate-induced nephropathy after hair straightening procedures of the type described here,” the letter said. claims. “Glyoxylic acid has been patented and recently introduced into hair straightening products as a potentially safer alternative to formulations containing formaldehyde.”

“Given the potential nephrotoxicity of topical glyoxylic acid, we recommend that products containing this compound be avoided and withdrawn from the market.”

The article also noted that 26 patients in Israel suffered acute kidney injury after a “Brazilian” hair straightening procedure.
