Brave NYPD Officer Leaps into Water to Arrest Suspect

A dramatic incident unfolded in New York City when a police officer bravely jumped into the water to apprehend a suspect with a history of criminal activity. This all took place during the arrest of Matthew Swaford, a known career criminal, in Queens on August 5.

As the New York Police Department (NYPD) shared footage of the event, it showed female officers removing gear before diving into the water. Swaford had attempted to escape by jumping into the East Rockaway Inlet. The officers responded quickly, chasing him and managing to secure his arrest. Additional support arrived soon after, including firefighters and lifeguards, to get Swaford safely back to shore.

According to statements from the NYPD, Swaford initially jumped from a dock to evade capture. Officers quickly pursued him into the water, where a struggle ensued. The police communications captured an officer reporting, “I got a perp that just jumped into the water.” Eventually, the struggle concluded with Swaford in custody.

Police described Swaford as a repeat offender, now facing numerous charges, including grand theft auto, criminal possession of stolen property, and obstructing governmental administration.
