Ohio Woman Sentenced for Stabbing Death of Young Boy

Cleveland, Wisconsin – A judge delivered the maximum sentence on Monday to a woman convicted of fatally attacking a 3-year-old boy in an Ohio grocery store parking lot last summer.

Bionca Ellis was found guilty earlier this month of multiple charges, including aggravated murder. On Monday, the 34-year-old received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

During the trial, Ellis chose not to testify. Her attorney claimed a defense of not guilty by reason of insanity, arguing that she had long struggled with mental illness and was not in a sound state of mind during the incident.

The mother of the child, Margot Wood, tearfully recounted in her testimony how Ellis stabbed her son, Julian, without any apparent reason at the Giant Eagle store in North Olmsted, where Wood herself was also wounded. She expressed that she didn’t even know Ellis prior to the attack.

Before the sentencing, Wood conveyed her anguish to the court, saying, “Every day I replay that woman who killed my son in my head. It’s a living nightmare for me. The last thing I’ll hear from my son is his screams and the sounds of pain and fear before he dies.” She added that the fear in her son’s eyes continues to haunt her daily.

Jared, Julian’s father, also shared in court that his son, who had a love for dinosaurs, was intelligent, funny, and could uplift those around him. “That monster took him from us,” he said. He remarked that a part of their hearts would forever be missing, and it’s essential for everyone to keep Julian’s spirit alive even in his absence.

Wood confronted Ellis directly, stating, “You deserve to be in prison for the rest of your life so you don’t hurt anyone else. You don’t deserve a second chance. You don’t deserve mercy. You gave nothing to my son.”

Mental health experts who testified for the defense indicated that Ellis suffers from severe mental illness, impacting her ability to discern right from wrong.

Before the sentencing concluded, Ellis briefly stated, “I just want to apologize”—though her words were difficult to make out.

Reports indicated that Ellis had exhibited mental health problems in the past and had only recently been released from prison just days prior to the murder, even though there was a recommendation for another mental health assessment.

Conversely, experts for the prosecution asserted that Ellis’s actions stemmed from anger, not mental incapacity. They claimed she had felt wronged by someone at the North Olmsted Police Department regarding missing money after her recent arrest for a probation violation. Following this, surveillance footage showed her retrieving a knife from a thrift store trash can before heading to the Giant Eagle wielding it.
