Incident Involving Border Patrol Agents in Maine
A woman was taken into custody after allegedly trying to run over U.S. Border Patrol agents who were assisting with the detainment of two undocumented immigrants in Maine.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that 24-year-old Olivia Wilkins now faces multiple charges, including aggravated reckless conduct, criminal threats with a dangerous weapon, reckless driving, hindering an arrest, obstructing a government function, and failing to stop for law enforcement.
This situation unfolded on Monday when Border Patrol agents were helping the Maine State Police and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office following a rollover accident involving two individuals, Jhoan Andres Ortiz-Calderon and Victor Hugo Cardona-Calderon. Authorities noted that Ortiz-Calderon had a final order of removal from an immigration judge, while Cardona-Calderon had overstayed his visa and lacked a work permit.
As the agents were escorting the two men towards a USBP vehicle, Wilkins, who was nearby, began to verbally insult the officers.
“She then utilized her vehicle to drive toward the group of law enforcement officers, screeching her tires and swerving dangerously close to them,” the news release explained.
Wilkins was subsequently pursued by sheriff’s deputies but crashed her vehicle along the roadside before being arrested.
“This incident follows a troubling pattern. Just two weeks ago, a threatening letter containing a white powdery substance was sent to an ICE office in New York City. Not long ago, there was an attack in San Francisco where a violent rioter was charged for threatening to stab an ICE officer and harm his family. Earlier this week, a bomb threat targeted an ICE facility in Dallas,” a spokesperson for DHS indicated.
“This surge in violence comes on the heels of months of harsh criticism and inflammatory rhetoric from activists, politicians, and the media, comparing ICE to the Nazi Gestapo and other notorious groups. Such language has fostered a culture of animosity towards law enforcement, leading to an astonishing 1,000% increase in assaults against them. It’s time for sanctuary politicians, activists, and media figures to reconsider their rhetoric,” the spokesperson added.
