Sunlight Avoidance Leads to Severe Health Issues
A 48-year-old woman from Chengdu, China, developed severe osteoporosis after years of avoiding sunlight due to her fear of sunburn. Her long-standing use of sunscreen and protective clothing since childhood resulted in extremely low levels of vitamin D. Consequently, her bones became fragile, leading to incidents such as fracturing a rib just from turning in bed. Medical professionals noted that her bones are so weak that even simple actions can lead to fractures.
Dr. Long Shuang, who is treating her at Xindu Hospital, shared that her avoidance of sunlight began early in life, influenced by societal beauty standards in China that often emphasize fair skin. It’s not clear if her family ever raised concerns about her sun avoidance, but the repercussions became evident after her injury. Tests conducted after her admission indicated severely low vitamin D levels, facilitating rapid bone resorption and resulting in the osteoporosis diagnosis.
Sunlight plays a crucial role in vitamin D production, which is essential for bone health as well as calcium absorption. Extended periods of avoiding sunlight can weaken bones and compromise immune function.
Health Risks of Extreme Sun Avoidance
The trend of extreme sun avoidance is on the rise in China, with many women employing various methods such as visors, gloves, and UV-blocking clothing to shield themselves from the sun. However, experts are beginning to caution that such excessive measures could pose serious health risks.
Jiang Xiaobing, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Guangzhou Medical University’s 2nd Associated Hospital, addressed this issue in an online video. He pointed out that it is becoming common to see individuals fully covered in layers for protection, which is deemed unhealthy. Notably, all bones in the human body regenerate approximately every ten years, but after age 30, people generally start to lose bone mass at a rate of about 0.5-1% annually.
To combat these risks, it’s important to maintain adequate calcium intake, engage in regular exercise, and limit habits like smoking and excessive drinking. For instance, consuming more than two cans of beer a day, especially with a 5% alcohol content, can be problematic. Furthermore, women going through menopause need to be particularly vigilant in managing their bone health.
