The smell of fondue currently wafting through the mixed zone is even stronger than what the teams in Group D are capable of. Some VIPs (alas, not us) obviously want spicy food.

The first informal conversations among media members backstage were that England would do very well to advance through the group stage.

A geeky statistic that I'm pretty proud of is that no team has ever won the Women's Euros by drawing outside of Group A or B, and the last time a team from Group C or D won was in 2009 (England). It means that it is only. final.

There are some caveats to that. Notably, until 2009, only eight teams could participate in this competition, and it only increased to 16 teams in 2017. But there's also science behind it. Being in Group A or B means you have more rest between games and more time to recover for the finals. Group A winners generally tend to have the most hospitable knockout paths. If you want the best route to Basel, you should be in group A or B.

As I talk to my media colleagues from other countries across Europe here at the SwissTech Convention Center in Lausanne, there is one team they all want to avoid. It's England. And when teams are picked from pot two, it's not hard to see why they're keen to avoid holders. Due to UEFA's decision to seed the draw pot based on Nations League results rather than world rankings, Pot 3 leaves world No. 4 England with world No. 12, No. 13 and No. 14 Denmark, Italy and Iceland. Probably much more powerful than pot 2 with the team. each. The Lionesses comfortably defeated the Italians 5-1 in February, illustrating their varying strength in the pot. Whichever group England are in, it will probably be in the 'Group of Death'.
