Controversy at the Australian Open
Tennis commentators expressed dissatisfaction over a “disgusting” incident during the Australian Open trophy presentation. Coach Elena Rybakina was recognized after she claimed her first title, defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling final on Saturday night.
The 26-year-old Rybakina displayed remarkable skill at Rod Laver Arena, overcoming a 3-0 deficit in the third set to win by scores of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Sabalenka, visibly emotional, crumbled as the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup slipped from her grasp, while Rybakina celebrated with a quiet fist pump following a key serve.
This win marked Rybakina’s second Grand Slam title, having previously triumphed at Wimbledon in 2022. After her victory, she exchanged handshakes with Sabalenka and the referee, then waved to the audience with her racket before embracing her coaching team.
Rybakina’s hug with her coach, Stefano Vukov, sparked unease among commentators. The discomfort only intensified when Vukov was invited to the podium to collect the trophy designated for the winning coach. Receiving the award from former champion Jennifer Capriati, he stood on the left side of the stage.
It’s worth noting that Vukov, who played a pivotal role in Rybakina’s success at Wimbledon, had faced a suspension concerning alleged violations of the WTA code of conduct. Reports suggested he had been harsh towards players, something he denied vehemently. Rybakina, equally furious over these allegations, defended him, stating, “I always said he never abused me.” He made a return to her corner at the US Open last year after his ban was lifted.
Reports from the New York Times indicated Rybakina and Vukov, who is twelve years her senior, had been sharing a hotel room during the 2025 Australian Open, suggesting a romantic involvement during her suspension. Vukov began coaching Rybakina when he was just 19.
At the 2024 U.S. Open, he was reportedly instructed to step back from coaching duties due to conflicts with Rybakina’s team. Observers recalled that he had been persistently contacting her, bombarding her with messages and calls while walking around a Manhattan hotel.
This past Saturday’s trophy ceremony stirred reactions because of Vukov’s presence. Commentator Catherine Whittaker described it as “awkward and uncomfortable” to witness him accept the trophy, referring to the tournament’s coaching award as a “misfire” with poor optics. She remarked, “Tonight was a particularly extreme example of that feeling very uncomfortable.”
Co-host Matt Roberts echoed the sentiment, noting that the audience seemed to share the discomfort, with applause feeling muted and awkward. Rybakina was later queried about Vukov’s return during the post-match press conference. She expressed gratitude for her team’s achievements, stating, “I think this is a win for the whole team, for everyone who supports me.”
Interestingly, while celebrating her final ace, Rybakina displayed humility, waving to the crowd with a smile, quite contrasting Sabalenka’s posture, as she covered her head with a towel during the trophy presentation.
