Women’s NCAA Championship Scene
Right now, the women’s NCAA landscape is dominated by four powerhouse teams: the UConn Huskies, UCLA Bruins, Texas Longhorns, and South Carolina Gamecocks. These teams have consistently performed at a high level throughout the season and are now vying for postseason glory.
They’re the frontrunners to make it to the Final Four in Phoenix, Arizona. But, as we know, anything can happen during March Madness. You never really know how a sudden-death bracket will unfold. A slip-up here or an unexpected performance there can seriously shake up expectations. Some matchups in the bracket, too, could spell trouble for these top teams.
This raises an interesting question: Who might emerge as a dark horse capable of pulling off an upset in the Final Four?
The Michigan Wolverines might just be that team. With a standout duo in Saira Sword and Olivia Olson, who both received first-team All-Big Ten honors, they’ve secured a top-16 seed and a solid spot in their region.
This Michigan squad is unflinching in high-stakes moments. They nearly toppled the undefeated No. 1 UW this season, losing by just a hair’s breadth. Last year, they took down Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament and are gearing up for their first two rounds this weekend. Their motivation and ability to rise to the occasion make them prime candidates for an upset, especially based on the matchup dynamics they face.
If Michigan manages to reach the Elite Eight, they could face off against Texas, which would be an intriguing clash. Texas is more defense-oriented, leading to potentially low-scoring games. However, Michigan’s shooting skills and fast pace might just give them the edge they need against a team like Texas.
It’s also worth noting that the University of Oklahoma shares the same ranking as South Carolina, a detail that could greatly affect the Final Four forecast. South Carolina has suffered three losses this season—two to Texas and one to Oklahoma. That particular game went into overtime, where freshman Aliyah Chavez scored a clutch 15 points to secure a memorable victory.
In a twist, Oklahoma has a notable advantage down low against South Carolina, which is something to think about in women’s basketball. Reagan Beers from OU is putting up impressive numbers, averaging 15.7 points in under 25 minutes per game. This factor could possibly lead to a major upset in the Sweet Sixteen, reminiscent of UW’s earlier unexpected exit at the hands of Ohio State.
West Virginia Mountaineers
Meanwhile, the West Virginia Mountaineers have been surprising teams all season and secured a 4 seed in their region. They’ve shown resilience by defeating No. 15 Duke, No. 11 Iowa State, No. 14 Baylor, and surprisingly upending No. 10 TCU to clinch the Big 12 Tournament Championship. What’s one more upset to add to this list?
In their bracket, they are likely to need to defeat 5-seed Kentucky in the second round before facing Texas in the Sweet Sixteen. If they make it to that stage, it would undeniably qualify as an upset.
Similar to Texas, West Virginia relies on tough defense to stifle the offensive prowess of their opponents’ star players. The contrasting styles between these two teams could present quite the challenge.
