Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he would vote Republican if asked repeatedly if he supported former President Donald Trump.
Anchor Kristen Welker said, “Let me ask you a question about former Vice President Mike Pence. As you know, he made a lot of headlines this weekend when he said he didn’t support his former boss, Donald Trump.” comes after a number of Trump critics, from Mitch McConnell to Chris Sununu to Brian Kemp, have announced their support for Donald Trump.I know this question gets asked a lot. But now that he’s the presumptive nominee, I have to ask: do you support Donald Trump?”
“I’m laughing because this continues my streak on Meet the Press of being asked this and similar questions,” Cassidy said. My staff underestimated how much time I would need. All I can say at this point is that I intend to vote Republican for President of the United States.”
Welker said, “And I have to continue this streak and ask for a follow-up to get an answer from you, Senator. Again, do you support it or exclude it? will you do?
“The answer I’m going to give and have consistently given is that I’m going to vote Republican for president of the United States,” Cassidy said.
Cassidy said, “You still don’t support him.”
Mr. Welker said: “By the way, I’ve answered this question many times before. I’ve answered this question many times before on every show, but that’s my answer anyway.”
Cassidy said, “I hear you. This week is a little different because he just became the presumptive nominee, which means I’m not planning on supporting him. You’re right. I support and plan to vote Republican. Will you vote for Donald Trump or write your name?”
Cassidy said, “That’s great, Kristen, but I’m going to vote Republican for President of the United States.”
“Would you rule out voting for Donald Trump?” Welker said. Let’s hear it. Is that unexpected for you? ”
Cassidy said: “I think you’re kind of beating a dead horse right now. I’ve made my answer very clear, and I’ve answered this in more detail in the past. Therefore, I think this I stand by what I have said up to this point and intend to vote for the Republican Party for President of the United States.”
