Wood and mallard ducks discovering romance in Central Park

Unlikely Duck Duo in Central Park

In a curious twist of nature, a male wood duck has formed an unusual bond with a female mallard in Central Park this spring. Their romance began back in February, and birdwatching enthusiasts have spotted them paddling happily together across various bodies of water in the park.

David Barrett, an experienced birdwatcher from Manhattan, shared that it’s quite uncommon for a wood duck to pursue a mallard. He noted this particular male has been seen with different mallards over the years, making this romance a noteworthy occurrence. “It’s not often you see a wood duck courted like this,” he commented.

Barrett explained that, typically, it’s the males who make the courting choices. Interestingly, this wood duck seems to have a specific preference for mallards. It’s rare for such dynamics to form; usually, seasonal pairings are the norm in the duck world rather than lasting commitments.

The lovebirds started their relationship on the icy shores of the reservoir, where they’ve become inseparable since. Barrett described how fiercely the male protects his mate, often driving away other ducks that come too close. “It’s almost funny how aggressive he gets,” he said, laughing. “Sometimes he’s off scavenging for food, yet always keeps an eye on her.”

While there’s no confirmation that this wood duck has previously raised any hybrid ducklings with mallards, there have been rumors in the past. A potential offspring reportedly disappeared shortly after being spotted due to natural predators in the park.

Despite the uncertainties, there’s a glimmer of hope that this pairing may produce a hatchling during the breeding season in July. Sarah O’Coyne from the Urban Parks Department emphasized how such interspecies connections highlight the adaptability of wildlife. “These relationships can provide critical insights into behavior and biodiversity,” she remarked.

What’s undeniable is the affection between the two. Barrett observed, “They’re always close together, swimming and keeping company. It’s quite sweet to see. The male still performs all the usual courting behaviors, trying to impress her.”

For those interested in witnessing this charming couple, the best spot to catch a glimpse is the east side of the reservoir near 91st Avenue.
