American Runners Exempted from World Championships
Three American runners have been granted an exemption from competition at the World Road Running Championships following an unusual incident during the U.S. Half Marathon Championships. Jessica McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Edna Kurgat were directed off course during the race held in Atlanta, and now World Athletics has decided to let the U.S. take seven runners to the event planned for September.
Interestingly, only four of these athletes will compete for medals or prize money, as the rest will be categorized differently at the championships in Copenhagen. World Athletics expressed empathy for the situation, acknowledging the “unprecedented circumstance” that U.S. Track and Field (USATF) finds itself in.
“We appreciate their cooperation in honoring all athletes involved in this extraordinary situation,” USATF remarked.
In a strange turn of events, McClain, who was leading the race, found herself misdirected by a news vehicle about two miles from the finish line. As a result, she ended up in ninth place, while Hurley and Kurgat finished in 12th and 13th, respectively. Reflecting on the experience, McClain noted on her Instagram, “Good things take time.”
World Athletics described the incident as an “unusual set of circumstances” and clarified that this exemption is a unique situation.
