The world's number one ranked golfer made fun of a reporter who asked a strange question about why his strokes were bad.
In the final round of the Tour Championship, world number one Scottie Scheffler shot 67 to win by four strokes at -30.
But on the par-4 eighth hole, Scheffler hit his tee shot into a greenside bunker, and then the flag was in frame, but replays showed Scheffler hit a shot wide right from the bunker.
“No one is safe from a shank, not even Scottie Scheffler,” the PGA Tour wrote above the video. X.
“It was a tremendous amount of pressure, but he handled it extremely well.”
Even though Scheffler won the tournament, ESPN's Mark Schlabach felt the need to focus on a rare mistake by Scheffler in his post-round press conference.
“What happened with the shot from the bunker?” the reporter asked.
“I shanked it,” Scheffler said emphatically.
“Why did you shank it?” Schlabach demanded.
Schaeffler then gave the reporter an entertaining explanation of the physics of golf clubs.
“The club has a straight part of the face and then there's the hosel, and here in particular, I caught that part of the face too far, which is why it's off to the right. It has a little bit of a curve to it,” Scheffler said. explanationThen laughter rang out throughout the room.
“And then,” Scheffler continued, as reporters desperately tried to interject, “you hit the straight part and it goes that way… and you hit this part and it goes this way.”
“I know what the season is, thank you,” the reporter replied, and Scheffler laughed.
It was later revealed that when Scheffler shanked the ball, his caddie was reminding him who he was to help him regain his confidence.
“Remember who you are,” caddie Ted Scott said. “You're Scottie Scheffler.”
Scott explained that there is a lot of pressure on Scheffler's shoulders and he just needs to keep the champion's focus on the match.
“It's been like eight months since I've known I'd be leading here,” the caddie continued. PGA TOUR“It was a tremendous amount of pressure, but he handled it extremely well.”
Scheffler said he's proud of his results but tries not to focus on winning the tournament.
“Maybe in the last few years I put too much pressure on myself to perform,” Scheffler revealed, “but this year I was able to stay mentally calm and collected.”
The champion said the win was an “amazing feeling” and that it felt “really special” to take home the FedExCup championship, awarded to the tour's overall winner.
