Worship Pastor Facing Sexual Abuse Allegations Takes His Own Life - Guest Commentary

Former Worship Pastor Found Dead Following Abuse Charges

On February 16, 2026, David A. Rogers, who was the worship pastor at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Owensboro, Kentucky, was arrested in connection with allegations involving a minor. This followed numerous reports of sexual contact. The inquiry had begun in early January, but the claims reportedly dated back nearly a decade.

Tragically, after his arrest, the 40-year-old was discovered dead near his home in Utica on February 19, 2026. Authorities indicated that the death appeared to be a suicide, occurring around 9:45 a.m. that day.

The investigation suggested that Rogers had developed sexual relationships with minors, exploiting a “special bond of trust.” He faced serious charges, including three counts of rape, two counts of sodomy in a position of authority, and one count of sexual abuse. His role in the church facilitated encounters with the young individuals involved.

Following his arrest and a confession to the charges, the response from both the church and the public was one of shock at the occurrence of a suicide just three days later. Although family members had posted $75,000 in bail, it seemed that Rogers felt he had no way out.

Davis County Warden Art McGlinger commented on the situation, explaining that no earlier information had indicated that Rogers was suicidal at the time of his evaluation and detention. Nonetheless, due to the gravity of the charges, he was placed on suicide watch as a precaution.

McGlinger described these post-arrest suicides as tragic. “It’s difficult to understand how things reach this point. It has happened before, and likely will again, but it’s not common for someone recently charged to take their own life. My thoughts go out to everyone involved, including the families affected by this situation.”
