A 14-year-old boy shot and killed a man who was knocking on a door in a Houston neighborhood during a suspected break-in attempt, authorities said Thursday.

The man was killed in the shooting just before 7 a.m. in the front yard of a home in the 14400 block of Brownsville Street, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

A 14-year-old boy shot and killed a man who was randomly knocking on his neighbor’s door at a Houston-area home, authorities said. (KRIV)

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the man had been knocking on the door and may have been trying to break in, where he was shot. A teenage boy reportedly fired shots from inside the home.

He fired five to six shots. His parents were not home at the time and had just left to take his siblings to school.

Authorities said the man was wearing gloves and carrying a backpack. FOX Houston report.

Homeless advocacy groups said they recognized the man as homeless in the area.

The boy is cooperating with the investigation.
