Ravens Struggle Without Their Star QB

Injuring a franchise quarterback always presents a tough challenge. It takes a deft hand to steer the season when such a crucial player is sidelined. The rest of the team has to elevate their game to compensate, but the Ravens fell short of this task.

Now, I have to say, Zach Taylor isn’t the best coach in the league, so I can understand some lackluster performances from the Bengals. But John Harbaugh? The Ravens should have better organization and discipline. Still, even with Lamar Jackson potentially returning, they seem out of sorts, and it’s hard to see them making a serious run this season.

To put it bluntly, the hype surrounding the Baltimore Ravens might have been overblown.

This past Sunday, something seemed off when the Ravens faced the Texans. The atmosphere in M&T Bank Stadium was eerily quiet, filled with shock and a bit of disgust. A dip in performance was expected, especially with Cooper Rush stepping in, but losing 44-10 to a Texans team that had previously struggled is more than just embarrassing.

Losing can be tough, but what’s worse is completely going against the identity of your team. The Ravens have been known for their grit over the years, but to call them “soft” after Sunday’s performance feels like an insult to toilet paper. They’ve built a reputation, and this game didn’t help maintain it.

The Ravens’ defense was particularly disappointing, allowing a staggering 6.3 yards per offensive play. CJ Stroud had no trouble against them, successfully targeting receivers like Christian Kirk and Nico Collins. Honestly, if you wore a Texans jersey on that day, it was like a feast.

The Ravens’ secondary has had its issues, but a poor pass rush exacerbated the situation. Houston’s offensive line isn’t great, yet the Ravens failed to adjust. Stroud was pressured only a few times, and it’s shocking to see how easily he was able to operate.

It’s almost surreal how one player’s absence can shift the entire dynamic of a team. Without Jackson, Baltimore seems to lack any real identity or toughness. It felt like a workplace without a leader, where everyone was just going through the motions.

And it’s not just Jackson’s absence that’s a concern. It seems like the team heavily relies on him, which really isn’t ideal for a contender. Other AFC teams, like the Bills, have managed to maintain performance irrespective of their star players’ on-field presence.

Given what we saw this past Sunday, it’s no surprise that the Steelers might edge towards the AFC North title by default.

Winners: New England Patriots

On a brighter note, perhaps it’s time to recognize that the Patriots are actually doing pretty well this season. They’ve flown under the radar, but their recent performance against the Bills was more than just a fluke. It speaks volumes about the progress under Mike Vrabel.

This is a team that defies expectations. Yes, their roster seems lightweight, with a struggling offensive line and questionable receiving corps. But Vrabel has managed to extract every ounce of potential from this group, making it hard to ignore the progress they’re making.

Drake May has been consistent, and despite a shaky pass rush, the defense is often underrated. They excel at keeping games uncomfortable for opponents, which was evident against the Bills. Josh Allen faced significant pressure all night, which severely undermined his performance.

Looking ahead, the Patriots have a favorable schedule involving matchups against the Saints, Titans, Browns, Jets, and Bengals. It’s quite feasible for them to enter Thanksgiving with an 8-3 record, a real testament to their resilience this season.

I’ve been curious to see which teams would step up as contenders. It seems the Broncos are starting to show promise too, though they’ve had their struggles. While they stumbled early on, they put together an impressive comeback recently. Beating Philadelphia is no small feat, and they proved they can compete with top-tier teams.

Outside of Buffalo, the AFC remains wide open, so who knows? Perhaps the Broncos could emerge as a serious contender.

Now, switching gears—a what just happened moment. If someone had told me that the Dolphins were facing the Panthers, I wouldn’t have expected Devon Achane and Rico Dowdle to be the leading running backs. One dominated with over 200 yards, while the other… well, didn’t exactly shine.

As October rolls in, a series of odd performances seem to diminish the Dolphins’ season, especially with Dowdle’s impressive display paving the way for a Carolina comeback. He averaged an eye-popping 9.0 yards per carry—definitely a breakout moment for him.

If the name Dowdle doesn’t ring a bell, I completely understand. Not every player’s name goes mainstream. But it was interesting to see Fox bring Eric Collins to commentate on the Dolphins vs. Panthers game. He’s known for injecting excitement into broadcasts, and that definitely showed during the second quarter.

His enthusiastic commentary brought a fresh vibe to the viewing experience, turning every catch and play into something thrilling. It felt like the excitement of discovering sports anew, and honestly, we could all use more of that energy.

Now, as for the Cardinals, after a relatively promising start, things seem to be heading towards mediocrity. Sure, they managed some close wins, but losses to the likes of the 49ers and Titans really cast doubt on their season. The performance against Tennessee wasn’t flattering, and it raises questions about the team’s future.

Honestly, I don’t really know where the Cardinals go from here. They feel stuck, especially with Kyler Murray still out. The running game has issues without James Connor, and defensively, they’re not anything to write home about.

Interestingly, while the Cardinals are floundering, the Colts are surprising everyone with their performance. It’s ironic how both teams, each with ex-Eagles coordinators, have taken such divergent paths.

In a somewhat surprising twist, the Jets’ head coach is now infamous for starting his tenure at 0-5. This franchise has certainly had its share of not-so-great coaches, but Glenn now stands out as a benchmark for disappointment.

What’s shocking is how soft the Jets’ defense has looked. There’s zero edge or fierceness. It’s almost a situation where the offense might actually be performing better than the defense, which is saying something about how grim things are. It’s hard to see how this team wins a game, let alone avoid finishing with a record like 0-17.
