Wrestler Accused of Shooting Female Gymnast in Fetal Position Claims Self Defense

The college wrestler accused of shooting and killing gymnast Carla Welsh as she lay in the fetal position on the floor of her apartment claims he did so in self-defense.

Breitbart News reported that Welsh, 21, was shot and killed near the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on August 30, 2024. The following day, Chad T. Richards, 23, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Richards was a wrestler for the Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team in 2021-2022, and the apartment where the shooting occurred is his.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, September 7, 2024 attention Richards told police he and Welsh got into an argument and Welsh grabbed his gun from a nightstand. Richards then claimed he took the gun from Welsh and “shot Welsh with the gun because he feared for his life.”

Welsh was shot eight times, and the criminal complaint against Richards states that Richards “fired several shots while Welsh was in the fetal position.”

FOX News pointed out Richards is being held on $1 million bail.
