David Dennis Jr., a writer for ESPN, has joined the conversation among critics suggesting that advertisements featuring actress Sidney Sweeney for American Eagle Jeans are somehow linked to the resurgence of far-right ideologies.

In a discussion on the social media platform Brask, Dennis argued, without providing evidence, that “experts” had concluded Sweeney’s ads drew inspiration from eugenics and fascist themes.

On Monday, he expressed his surprise, stating in a rather emphatic post that he hadn’t initially thought much about the Sweeney ads. However, after hearing from scholars about the connections to eugenics and fascism, he claimed he felt regret for not understanding the implications sooner.

I didn’t think about Sydney Sweeney ads. But then, real scholars on messaging, eugenics and fascism explained what was going on.

It’s worth noting that Dennis did not specify which “experts” he was referring to.

In a subsequent post, he sarcastically remarked that the jeans brand has made it “safe” to appreciate “pretty white women” once again.

He wrote, in a tone that seemed to blend irony with commentary, that he was pleased these advertisements allowed for the acceptance of traditional, attractive blonde women back into societal norms.

We are delighted that these AE ads make it safe for traditional, attractive, blue-eyed blonde women to be accepted into society again. They are no longer the tragedy of society they once were! Finally!

Despite its reputation, American Eagle has long showcased progressive ideas, notably through its “curve” line designed for a diverse range of body types and advertisements that celebrate inclusion during Pride Month. So it’s curious that a single ad featuring a white model has sparked claims of “white supremacy” or “fascism.”
