Writers Guild in Hollywood Faces Strike Threat from Its Own Staff Union

Writers Guild of America West Votes to Authorize Strike

Members of the Writers Guild of America West have authorized a strike, claiming that union leaders have been negotiating in bad faith with studio representatives. Reports indicate that union officials organized in the spring of 2025 and have persistently sought improved pay and job protections in their original contract. Negotiations for better terms have been ongoing since September, with the most recent meeting occurring on January 17.

During a break from negotiations, members of the Writers Guild staff union staged a picket outside the headquarters, demanding that disciplinary actions against employees be based on “just cause” and that they participate in “fair trade.” The staff union, which represents Pacific Northwest employees, held a vote where 82 out of 100 members supported strike authorization due to alleged unfair labor practices, including secret negotiations, unilateral changes to working conditions, unlawful surveillance, and retaliatory actions.

The union shared their stance on Instagram, stating, “If management does not negotiate in good faith with us at the table, we will see them on the picket line. It’s finally here.”

The vote to strike comes in the wake of a complaint filed by WGA West in August, accusing the organization of unfairly terminating a member. WGA West has denied these allegations.

A spokesperson for WGA West remarked that the organization has been negotiating in good faith with the employee union since September and has put forward a comprehensive proposal that includes various protections, compensation, and benefits enhancements. They suggested that public assertions to the contrary are inaccurate and that the claims of unfair labor practices lack merit. WGA West respects employees’ rights to collective action and hopes to finalize an initial contract agreement soon.

Additionally, the staff union is looking for guarantees regarding the use of generative AI in their work. Management has stated there are no current plans to integrate generative AI but is cautious that staff proposals might impede potential future use of the technology.
