Wyndham Clark sets new course record at Pebble Beach

No one had ever shot a 60 in the 105-year history of Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Until Saturday, that is, Windham Clark did it.

The defending U.S. Open champion shot a 12-under 60 in the third round of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Saturday, setting a course record.

Clark dominated the front nine with a 28 with two eagles and four birdies. He also had birdies on 10 and 11, and was 10 strokes under at that point.

On the 12th, he ran into trouble after hitting the par-3 tee shot into the front side bunker. His out was in the deep rough right next to another trap, and he chipped left-handed but it went haywire. But he limited the damage by hitting a 25-footer from the fringe to save bogey.

Clark quickly got back to work with back-to-back birdies, but parsed the next three to catch up on holes 56 to 17. His birdie putts on Nos. 16 and 17 were about an inch short.

To beat the course record of 61, he needed a birdie on the par-5 18th and an eagle for a 59.

He got on the green in two and made a 26 1/2-foot 59 putt, but it dropped to the right. But he shot a 60, putting his name alone at the top of the hundreds of thousands of players who have played the famous Bay Area course.

The previous tournament record was a 62 shared by four players, but the course record was a 61 set by Harley Long of Texas Tech University in 2017 at a college tournament.

Clark started the day at 5 under par, six strokes behind the leader. He entered the clubhouse with a three-shot lead.

Scottie Scheffler was the last player to complete a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour, doing so at the 2020 Northern Trust. Jim Furyk’s 58 at the Travelers in 2016 remains the lowest score on tour. Bryson DeChambeau shot a 12-under 58 at LIV Golf last August, and on Friday, Joaquin Niemann shot a 12-under 59 in the Saudi-funded Mexican League.

Clark won the U.S. Open last year at Los Angeles Country Club. This was his first and only professional win to date.
