Wyndham Clark speaks out about Oakmont ban following his 'terrible' outburst

Wyndham Clark shared his regrets on Sunday regarding a destructive incident involving a “bad” locker during this year’s US Open at Oakmont Country Club.

After finishing fourth at the British Open, where he shot an impressive 11 under at the Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, Clark expressed his desire to return to the course in Pittsburgh someday. He noted, though, that whether he gets the chance is, unfortunately, “up to them.”

“I did something terrible and I’m truly sorry,” the 31-year-old said. “I hope they can find it in their hearts to forgive me. Maybe I’ll get to play there again in the future.”

Clark stirred up considerable controversy in June when he violently smashed a locker at the Oakmont Clubhouse after failing to make the cut at the 2025 US Open, which came two years after his first major win at the Los Angeles Country Club.

Last week, Oakmont communicated its decision to ban Clark in a letter to its members.

According to a copy of the letter obtained by a publication, the club informed members about the circumstances surrounding Clark’s actions and emphasized that, following discussions with the USGA and the OCC Board of Directors, it was determined that he would no longer have access to the club facilities.

This decision will remain in effect unless the board formally reassesses it. Conditions for any potential return include Clark repaying damages, making significant contributions to a chosen charity, and successfully completing counseling or anger management sessions.

Clark, who previously made headlines for another outburst at the PGA Championship in May, added that he wanted to demonstrate to the Pittsburgh community that his actions at Oakmont “don’t reflect who I am.”

“Paying for the damages is one thing, but I also want to give back to the community since I hurt an important place in Pittsburgh. I really aim to show them that it won’t happen again,” he stated.

The 2033 US Open is scheduled to take place at Oakmont, which will coincide with the end of Clark’s 10-year exemption following his win in 2023.

This year’s British Open turned out to be Clark’s best finish yet in a major.

Scotty Scheffler claimed the second major of the year, finishing in fourth place after winning by four shots. He had already secured the PGA Championship in May.
