xAI Acknowledges ‘Unauthorized Changes’ Caused Grok’s Focus on ‘Genocide’ in South Africa

Elon Musk’s Xai Addresses GROK Controversy

Xai, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, has acknowledged “fraudulent changes” made to its GROK chatbots, resulting in inappropriate responses regarding the issue of “white genocide” in South Africa.

In a statement released on Thursday, Xai discussed the ongoing debate surrounding GROK Chatbot. This situation arose when the chatbot began generating responses on a politically sensitive topic, even when users posed unrelated questions. Many users on the platform X shared screenshots showcasing GROK’s unexpected reactions to inquiries about “white genocide.”

Xai stated that these changes “violated Xai’s internal policies and core values.” To address the issue, the company pledged to conduct a comprehensive investigation and enhance the transparency and reliability of GROK.

As part of its strategy, Xai plans to make the system prompts that guide GROK’s responses publicly accessible through a repository on GitHub. This initiative aims to ensure that all modifications to the chatbot’s system prompts are visible to users, fostering greater trust in GROK as a “truth-seeking AI.”

Furthermore, Xai will implement additional protocols to prevent unauthorized alterations to GROK’s system prompts by employees without proper oversight and will establish a dedicated team to monitor the chatbot’s responses round-the-clock, ready to address issues that automated systems may miss.

Before Xai’s admission, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and the creator of ChatGPT, made a sarcastic remark on X regarding the matter. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI before parting ways with Altman, is currently entangled in a major legal and public relations dispute with his former company.

When CNBC inquired whether GROK had been specifically programmed to address “white genocide,” the chatbot’s response was modified from an earlier contentious statement. GROK clarified that it is not designed to promote harmful ideologies and aims instead to provide safe, evidence-based responses.
