Xander Schauffele won his first major at the PGA Championship on Sunday, and it was a day of great joy for his family.
When Schauffele’s 6-footer clinched the victory (a miss would have forced a playoff with Bryson DeChambeau), he threw his arms in the air in a relaxed sigh of relief.
My wife Maya was the opposite.

In an interview with The Athletic, Maya said she was “fainting” from the celebrations.
“This means everything,” Maya said emotionally. “Everything he’s worked hard for, hard work pays off. He deserves it more than anything. Why would I say that? I look at that dedication, that hard work. He puts in a lot of hours and doesn’t have any days off. They practice all the time.”
The win was a legend-changer for the 30-year-old, who currently ranks among the top three in each major. He tied for second at the 2018 British Open Championship and the 2019 Masters, and tied for third at the 2019 U.S. Open. His previous best finish at the PGA Championship was a tie for 10th in 2017.

It remains to be seen whether Schauffele can overcome this obstacle on Sunday. He lost the 54-hole lead just the week before at Wells Fargo, marking just the sixth time he’s lost a tournament in which he had at least a share of the lead.
But Schauffele held up the Wanamaker Trophy with a big smile on his face, knowing his name would be etched forever.
Schauffele’s four-round score of 263 strokes was the lowest total score in major championship history, and his 21-under par was the best score-to-par in a major.
