Xavier Becerra, the California gubernatorial candidate, has not updated his campaign website since he became the sole Democrat to move forward from the June primary. It seems he is quite confident about his chances in the heavily Democratic state.
Unfortunately, parts of Becerra’s website are out of date. For instance, there are old references to Tom Steyer, once a leading candidate, and links to registration forms that are more than two months old—all dating back to when Becerra was still neck-and-neck with other candidates.
As it stands, Becerra’s only competitor is Republican Steve Hilton, and he is clearly the frontrunner, which perhaps explains why he hasn’t felt the need to prioritize updates on his website.
Despite earlier reports regarding his outdated site, it appears that some sections may have been refreshed. Initially, one page called “What Voters Need to Know” contrasted Becerra with billionaire Steyer, who was among the top Democratic hopes in the primary.
That page is gone now, but other sections remain unchanged. For example, under the “Help Xavier Win” part of the “Take Action” section, clicking leads to a form that still refers to the primary.
“We need to ensure that all voters across California know that there will be an important primary election on June 2nd and that Xavier Becerra is the best choice to be our next governor,” reads the outdated form.
Interestingly, since the primary, there haven’t been any new updates on the site. The last piece of information shared was from May 21, announcing, “Becerra causes riots in state on final day of primary.”
Yet, Becerra’s campaign has been more active on social media, sharing videos of his recent public appearances and critiques of Hilton that aren’t featured on the site.
Becerra mentioned that the website might have fallen behind due to spending sprees in the lead-up to the primary. A spokesperson later noted that a thorough redesign was in the works.
“I ran out of money by the June primary,” Becerra admitted.
This situation drew some fire from Hilton, who has been vocal about Becerra reportedly avoiding the press and has called for a direct debate between the two. Hilton described Becerra’s approach as “outrageous” and an “insult to voters.”
When approached for comment regarding the website, Hilton shared his views. Meanwhile, Becerra has tentatively agreed to at least one debate, although specifics remain unclear. Democrats held a conversation with reporters after an event on Tuesday.
