Kansas City Chiefs’ Xavier Worthy Injured in Season Opener
In an unexpected turn during the season opener in Brazil, the Kansas City Chiefs faced a setback when wide receiver Xavier Worthy was sidelined due to a shoulder injury. This unfortunate incident occurred during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Worthy was involved in a collision with tight end Travis Kelce while running a short route on third down. The impact seemed particularly tough as Kelce’s larger frame came down heavily on Worthy’s shoulder.
Immediately afterward, it became evident that Worthy’s injury was serious. He was seen on the sidelines, visibly distressed and holding his shoulder, with trainers attending to him. There were whispers that it might have been dislocated, though the team hadn’t specified the exact issue at that point.
As if this moment couldn’t get worse, Worthy left the field in Sao Paulo with a towel over his head, an expression of disappointment etched across his face—he did not return to the game.
This was a crucial second year for Worthy, who had just completed a solid rookie season. He was expected to be one of quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ primary targets, especially with Laci Rice facing a six-game suspension at the start of the season.
The Chiefs are hoping for a swift recovery for Worthy as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles—a rematch for Super Bowl LIX at Arrowhead Stadium.
In the initial part of the game, the Chiefs struggled to gain any momentum, with the Chargers quickly taking a 10-0 lead. Although the Chiefs managed to get into field goal range twice, it was clear they were missing their key player.
Worthy, who was the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Texas, had made a notable impact last season, recording 59 catches for 638 yards and six touchdowns across 17 games. His performance in the playoffs was particularly significant, leading the team with 287 yards on 19 receptions, along with three touchdowns.
Fans are anxiously awaiting updates on his condition, optimistic that he might be able to return for the next match.
