Yale got a little help from Idaho’s band during March Madness upset

There’s already a famous band known as Madness, but these musicians from the University of Idaho are taking it a step further.

With Yale’s pep band unable to travel from Connecticut to Spokane, Washington, the Idaho marching band stepped in to cheer on the Bulldogs’ come-from-behind victory over No. 13 Auburn.

“I saw them outside and they had sheet music, so they knew the music what to play,” Yale coach James Jones said after the game. “It was great. There’s nothing better than that atmosphere and the people coming out and supporting us and we can’t thank them more than being Bulldog fans.

“When you’re on the road, you’re often on the back foot, but a lot of times the crowd is in your favor. That helped me a little bit tonight as well.”

UI Band Director Spencer Martin and the 29-member ensemble donned Yale gear and colors after accepting the request earlier this week.

“It’s fun for the university and of course for the students.” Martin told the Lewiston (Idaho) Tribune. before the tournament begins. “The Vandals are going to the Ivy League.”

The University of Idaho, which plays in the Big Sky Conference and finished 11-21 overall this season, last appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 1990.
