New Insights into the Death of Francesco I de’ Medici

Researchers from Yale University have made significant strides in uncovering the mystery surrounding the death of Grand Duke Francesco I de’ Medici, a prominent figure from Italy’s Medici family, who passed away suddenly in 1587.

In a study published in the journal iScience, the team examined ancient DNA from Francesco and his brother Giovanni, who died from malaria just 25 years earlier. This investigation followed the sudden deaths of Francesco and his wife Bianca Capello, both of whom had been suffering from recurrent fevers, leading to speculation about poisoning.

Historians have long debated whether the couple was poisoned, particularly given the rapidity of their deaths, which fueled rumors of foul play involving Cardinal Ferdinando, Francesco’s brother and rival.

The research, guided by Selina Tucci, an assistant professor at Yale, included collaboration with paleopathologists from Italy’s University of Pisa. This interdisciplinary approach allowed for the extraction and analysis of DNA from the bones of the two Medici brothers.

One of the noteworthy findings was the presence of Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for the most severe form of malaria. This discovery challenges the long-standing theory that Francesco had been poisoned with arsenic. In particular, the analysis revealed genetic material that indicates both brothers had suffered from malaria, a disease quite common in central Italy during the Renaissance.

Contrary to popular belief, there’s now scientific evidence to support the claim that Francesco died of malaria rather than poisoning. The symptoms described in historical accounts align with those of malaria, which was locally referred to as “febbre terzana.”

While it’s critical to note that poisoning cannot be entirely ruled out, Professor Tucci emphasizes that malaria appears to be the most plausible explanation for Francesco’s death. She acknowledges that although other theories, like addiction, have been proposed, they lack substantial scientific backing.

“We found the pathogen responsible for malaria in the remains, confirming the infection,” Tucci remarked, suggesting that further genetic studies could shed light on other historical enigmas as well.

Gisela Caccone, a co-author of the study, underlined that understanding the evolution of this malaria strain could improve current models for its control. “The more knowledge we gain, the better equipped we are to address such health issues,” she added.

Overall, the research not only resolves some questions about the past but could also inform medical approaches for the future, making the findings all the more pertinent.
