Yankees acquire J.D. Davis in trade with A’s

Just before the Subway Series, the Yankees acquired the former Mets player to bolster their weakened lineup.

The team announced Sunday that it had acquired infielder J.D. Davis and cash from the Athletics in exchange for infielder Jordan Grosshans.

Davis, who played for the Mets from 2019-2022, was designated a designated player by the Athletics last week and is scheduled to join the Yankees on Tuesday at Citi Field.

Davis, a 31-year-old right-hander, offers the Yankees more proven hitting power as they deal with injured absences of Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo.

With Stanton on the disabled list with a hamstring injury, Oswaldo Peraza was promoted from Triple-A on Sunday, but manager Aaron Boone said Peraza was there “for the day,” suggesting the Yankees might acquire someone from outside the team.

That’s Davis, who is hitting .259 with a 112+ OPS in 633 career games. He was hitting .236 with a .670 OPS with the Athletics but was starting to improve (.275 with a .727 OPS in his final 24 games) before being designated for action.

Davis can play anywhere in the infield, but the Yankees will likely use him more frequently as a designated hitter while Stanton is out.

Jason Dominguez would have been an easy replacement for Stanton, but he injured his oblique muscle last weekend and is expected to be out for two months.
