The New York Yankees have agreed to acquire All-Star outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. in a trade with the Miami Marlins ahead of the MLB trade deadline in an effort to bolster their hitting depth.
According to ESPN, the Marlins received three Yankees prospects, including catcher Augustin Ramirez, in exchange for Chisholm.
New York needs to bolster its offensive lineup despite going 60-45 this season. Players like infielder DJ LeMahieu and outfielder Alex Verdugo have struggled, and the Yankees aren’t the same team that burst onto the scene when the 2024 season began.

The 26-year-old Chisholm can play all over the field and could provide a solid left-handed hitter for manager Aaron Boone’s lineup. Chisholm is batting .249/.323/.407 with 14 doubles, 13 home runs and 50 RBIs in 101 games with the Marlins this season.
However, Chisholm hasn’t performed well in July, batting just .198 in 94 at-bats with a .309 on-base percentage while walking just 12 times.
Despite Clayton Kershaw’s promising debut, the Dodgers need another ace
Chisholm also offers speed on the basepaths, an area the Yankees are lacking considering they rank 29th in stolen bases this season. Chisholm has made 22 steals, which is tied for 12th in MLB. As a team, the Yankees have made 43 steals this year.
It will be interesting to see how the Yankees use Chisholm as a fielder.
Chisholm began his MLB career as an infielder, playing second base and shortstop for his first three seasons with the Marlins, but in 2023 he was moved to center field and that has been his primary position since.
The Yankees outfield features Verdugo in left field, Aaron Judge in center field and Juan Soto in right field, and Boone may be looking to rotate the outfield to give players some rest and avoid tired legs, while also setting up a designated hitter rotation.

But with Verdugo hitting .178 in June and with a .287 on-base percentage this season, it’s possible Soto could move to left field, Judge revert to his usual role in right field and Chisholm take over center field duties.
Third base is also an obvious hole for the Bronx Bombers, but Chisholm has never played third base in his career, which could mean general manager Brian Cashman is looking to acquire multiple hitters to help carry a struggling lineup into the postseason.
The Yankees are pursuing Chisholm, but he’s not a rental player, and they needed three prospects to make the deal happen because he has two more years under contract before becoming a free agent in 2027.
Chisholm, like the rest of the Yankees, is a big personality suited to the bright lights of New York, and as long as he’s active, Yankees fans will love it.

The Yankees still need reinforcements at the corners of the infield and in the bullpen.
The MLB trade deadline is July 30th.
