Yankees announce wild-card lineup against Red Sox

The Yankees Prepare for the Wild Card Series Against the Red Sox

The Yankees are gearing up for the Wild Card series with their sights set on clinching their 28th championship. This round will see them face off against the Red Sox, with Game 1 scheduled for Tuesday night in the Bronx.

Interestingly, the Yankees’ roster includes three catchers. JC Eskara has joined the mix, replacing outfielder Austin Slater, while Will Warren has taken Ryan Yarbra’s spot in the bullpen. This strategic decision allows manager Aaron Boone to maintain flexibility, especially with pinch-hitting or running opportunities, particularly for Austin Wells and Ben Rice if both make the starting lineup.

Wells is set to catch in the first game, facing off against pitchers like Max Fried and left-hander Garrett Crochet. If the Red Sox bring in a right-handed reliever, it’s likely that Rice will step in as a pinch hitter. The Yankees acquired Slater at the trade deadline to strengthen their lineup against left-handed pitchers, but he hasn’t had substantial playing time and has struggled somewhat.

After the trade, Slater recorded a 25-3 batting average with 16 strikeouts. If the situation had unfolded differently, Trent Grisham might have been slotted in the left field instead. The Yankees only require three starting pitchers for this series, with Cam Schlittler set to pitch in Game 3 if necessary. Warren is versatile enough to be an effective option in the bullpen.

Lewis Gill didn’t make the roster following his start in the final regular-season game. Yarbra was initially placed in the bullpen as a second left-handed option but hasn’t performed at his best since dealing with a hamstring issue earlier this month.

Paul Blackburn, who was signed for depth in August, is also part of the roster after showcasing impressive performance lately. In his last seven outings, he maintained a 1.50 ERA with 14 strikeouts over 12 innings.
