Yankees bolster bullpen by acquiring Mark Leiter Jr. in Cubs trade

PHILADELPHIA — The Yankees have some relief.

According to The Washington Post’s Joel Sherman, the team agreed to a trade on Tuesday to acquire right-handed relief pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. from the Cubs in a deal that also sent top infielder Ben Cowles and top relief pitcher Jack Neely back to Chicago.

Reiter, the son of former Yankee Mark Reiter Sr. and nephew of former Yankee and Mets player Al Reiter, had a 4.21 ERA with 53 strikeouts in 39 games and 36 1/3 innings this season.

His 13.1 strikeouts per nine innings would lead the Yankees’ relief corps, which has been short on strikeouts this season.

The 33-year-old Reiter, a Toms River, New Jersey, native, is under club control through 2026.

Neely was an intriguing pitcher with a strong showing in Triple-A and was thought to be a possible move up to the Bronx this season, but he was part of the price to acquire a more experienced relief pitcher.
