The Yankees promoted an outfielder from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, but it wasn't Jasson Dominguez.
Instead, when rosters were expanded to 28 players before the series finale against the Cardinals in the Bronx, the team's top prospects remained in the minor leagues and the Yankees recalled Duke Ellis, the 26-year-old speedster they acquired on waivers from the Mariners last week.
Dominguez will remain in Triple-A while his season is delayed while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
He then tore an oblique muscle and missed more than a month of minor league play.
He was called up by the Yankees as the team's 27th batter for a July game, but his hitless and poor play led to the team's loss.
The 22-year-old Dominguez has hit nine home runs for SWB this season and could be in line for a promotion and postseason appearance at any time.
Ellis has appeared in eight major league games this season, primarily as a pinch runner.
He's been bouncing around this season, from the White Sox to the Mets to Seattle.
He played just one game with Scranton before being promoted.
The Yankees also recalled right-handed pitchers Scott Efros and Ron Marinaccio, who are both set to return from Tommy John surgery in 2022.
To free up space on the roster, the Yankees optioned first baseman Ben Rice and right-handed pitcher Will Warren to right field and designated left-handed pitcher Josh Maciejewski for assignment.
