Yankees Secure Hard-Fought Victory Over Cardinals

St. Louis – The Yankees can take comfort in knowing that wins don’t come with style points.

This weekend’s trio of victories wasn’t exactly a walk in the park, but for a team that desperately needs wins, they all help bolster the record.

In their latest game, the Yankees triumphed 8-4 against the Cardinals, scoring four runs on just one hit and breaking a tie in the ninth inning to complete a sweep at Busch Stadium.

Thanks, in part, to two errors by Cardinals’ second baseman Thomas Suggese, the Yankees (67-57) celebrated their fifth win in six games. The losses by the Blue Jays and Red Sox on Sunday only sweetened their success, benefiting them in both division contests.

In the ninth inning, Jose Caballero managed to reach base after a high chopper and, displaying impressive speed, advanced to second after Suggese made a bad throw to first.

Next up was Trent Grisham, who saw a passed ball go to the backstop while Caballero moved to third.

Grisham eventually hit a grounder, and that’s when Giancarlo Stanton came in to pinch hit for JoJo Romero. Stanton, who had been sidelined with some pain after playing in the outfield early in the week, hadn’t been active during the weekend.

After getting a walk and hitting a few foul balls, Stanton was pinch-run for by Anthony Volpe.

Romero, perhaps wanting to avoid facing Aaron Judge, intentionally walked him, loading the bases for Cody Bellinger.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. then grounded out, but the Yankees managed to pull even again with Paul Goldschmidt’s first hit of the frame.

Luke Weaver took to the mound for the ninth, having already finished the eighth inning with two outs.

Will Warren struggled early in the game, giving up three runs in the four innings he pitched. Although he left a tie game in the fifth, only one of the runs was earned due to a lack of support.

Later, the Cardinals regained the lead in the sixth inning when Kamilo Doval left a slider too good to hit, allowing Joher Pozo to smash a go-ahead home run.

However, Grisham’s walk—thanks in part to a dubious strike zone from home plate umpire Nicklenz—allowed the Yankees to tie it up in the seventh with a single from Judge and a sacrifice fly from Bellinger.

The Yankees hadn’t mustered any runs until the fourth, but once they broke through, they got moving.

After Chisholm drew his second walk of the day, Goldschmidt made his return after injuring his knee with a double. Jasson Domínguez followed up with an infield single, bringing Chisholm home and giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

Ryan McMahon and Caballero added singles, quickly extending the lead to 3-0 within a four-pitch span.

Things became tense when Grisham saw a pitch inside and Yankees’ coordinator Tanner Swanson was ejected from the dugout, causing Rice to jump out of the way.

The Cardinals retaliated with a pair of runs in their half of the inning, starting with a fielding error from McMahon.

Warren managed to get two outs around a walk but then gave up a two-run double by Suggese that sent Bellinger scrambling in right field.

As the game unfolded, another error from the Yankees compounded the situation. Chisholm dove for a ground ball but made an errant throw to first, allowing Lars Nootbaar to get to second base. Alec Burleson then brought in Nootbaar, tying the game at 3-3.
