Yankees’ Clay Holmes joins Aaron Judge, Juan Soto at All-Star Game

Clay Holmes hasn’t pitched like an All-Star in recent weeks, but he’s scheduled to play next week in the Midsummer Classic in Texas along with the Yankees’ Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.

The closer was named to the team on Sunday despite his struggles since June 13.

In his past seven appearances, the right-hander has allowed 11 hits, eight earned runs and two home runs in 6 2/3 innings.

He missed two saves during that time.

But before the recent downturn, Holmes was excellent.

Holmes has been dominant through his first 30 appearances this season, allowing just four earned runs and 28 hits in 29 1/3 innings.

Holmes’ struggles may have something to do with the Yankees’ terrible performance, which has reduced his chances for saves.

The Yankees entered Sunday having lost 15 of their past 21 games since June 13, and Holmes has contributed to the team’s woes, especially after he blew a save Friday against Boston when the team was one out away from a much-needed win.

Holmes, 31, was also named an All-Star in 2022.
