Scott Effross, who has faced a slew of injuries, is technically not fully rehabilitated, yet his situation remains largely unchanged.
His rehabilitation clock resumed on Sunday when he returned from a 15-day injury list but opted to stay with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Yankees are looking for him to pitch approximately 3⅓ innings across three games in the Florida Coast League, followed by another 3⅓ innings at Double-A Somerset, despite allowing two runs on four hits during his outing in Somerset on Saturday.
Manager Aaron Boone mentioned that this period is crucial for Effross as he regains his rhythm. “Really, that’s where he’s stacked up, days and weeks, and you start getting that polish again. Hopefully, he can do it and put himself in a position to join the mix,” he said before the subway series in the Bronx.
Effross has dealt with a series of difficult injuries. After the Yankees traded for him at the 2022 deadline, he underwent Tommy John surgery with a solid 2.13 ERA in 13 games. While recovering from elbow surgery, he even had back surgery in December 2023.
He made his way back to the majors last September but only managed three games before showing promise this spring. Unfortunately, he injured his hamstrings during his first Grapefruit League game.
While his hamstring was a setback in early April, now it’s more about clarity in returning, rather than just physical health.
Meanwhile, the Yankees have bolstered their bullpen recently with the return of Jonathan Loáisiga, potentially allowing Effross, who has a fantastic sweeping pitch, to make a smooth transition back into the mix.
“Continue to stack it up,” Boone advised Effross.
In other news, JT Brubaker, who suffered three broken ribs trying to avoid a comebacker during camp, has started his rehabilitation at High-A Hudson Valley.
Chisholm, dealing with a different strain, took ground balls and hit in the cage, engaging in conversation with Mets base coach Antoan Richardson, as they both share Bahamian heritage.
