Yankees executive’s son speaks out on mother’s sudden death: ‘We miss her’

Last weekend, Rachel Minaya, the wife of New York Yankees executive Omar, died suddenly at her New Jersey home.

The news was reported and eventually announced Monday before the Yankees’ game against the Tampa Bay Rays, and the team held a moment of silence.

Omar and Rachel have two sons, Teddy and Justin, with Teddy playing for the Portland Trail Blazers.

His eldest son, Teddy, said: Daily MailHe said there was a “void” in his family.

“That’s all I can say. We loved her and we miss her,” Teddy said. “We will miss her but … she will be with us in our hearts.”

Teddy added that the family will eventually break their silence, “but for now we just want to take it easy and ask that everyone respect our privacy.”

Minaya spent the majority of his baseball career with the New York Mets, spending nearly 30 years with the team over three stints and also serving as the team’s general manager from 2005 to 2010.

He joined the Yankees as a senior advisor for baseball operations ahead of the 2023 season.

“To those closest to her, she was a loving and caring mother and wife and a great support for her family and loved ones,” the Yankees said in a statement about X.

“Omar became a beloved member of the Yankees organization in a very short time and always demonstrated a unique ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Throughout his illustrious baseball career, he generously gave of his kindness and friendship to others. We offer our deepest condolences to Omar, his sons Justin and Teddy, and their family and friends during this unthinkable time. His family was an extension of our baseball family and this is a loss that we all feel deeply.”

According to Sports Illustrated in 2007, Omar met Rachel at a hair salon in New York City in 1989. The two were engaged the following year.
