TAMPA – My cousin met his family again on Saturday at Yankee Camp.
Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins came to Steinbrenner Field to visit his relatives and Yankees bailout Jake Cousins.
Quarterback Needy's giants and Jets can use something like Kirk Cousins, but it remains to be seen whether the Falcons will cut this offseason before their four-year second season and set up Michael Penix Jr. to move forward with the starters moving forward.
Jake Cousins, who is scheduled to start a throwing program on Monday after being closed for five weeks due to forearm tension, didn't mind having cousins around the New York area.
“It would be cool because it's hard to see each other's events or be in the same area just because we overlap as seasons,” he said recently. “So if we're in the same area it would be cool to see each other more often.”
Clark Schmidt pitched one inning of live batting practice on Saturday since dealing with last week's clumsy back.
It was the first time a right-handed person has faced a batsman since camp began, but he threw several shows before spring training began.
“He looked great,” manager Aaron Boone said. “Not surprising, right? I called the ball and the strike for it, and it was really good. He was sharp and electric.”
Schmidt threw about 20 pitches, including strikeouts from Oswald Cabrera and Trent Grisham.
If he bouncing off this session well, he is expected to throw another one before entering game action.
Ben Rice continued to make a fuss with the plate, excavating a home run that came out of the bat at 113.3 mph.
After adding muscle in the offseason, the catcher/first bass man has been hitting the ball remarkably this spring.
The Yankees made their first round cut from Big League camp on Saturday, reassigning minor league camps from RHP Shawn Boyle, Brennen Davis, RHP Chase Hampton, RHP Christian Hernandez, LHP Jay Bean Sandridge, RHP Kevin Stevens, RHP Leonardo Pestana and C omar Martinez.
New Jersey native Jen Paul, who played softball at Hofstra, was a home plate umpire on Saturday. Paul was umpire in Triple A last season.
“I actually got up and introduced myself there later in the game,” Boone said. “I had a pleasant interaction with her, and she has a good reputation.
“I thought she missed the couple's call to that first captain [inning]Boone added with a smile. “But overall I thought she did a good job. I certainly enjoyed my introduction to her.”
