The Yankees are doing well for themselves considering they became the first team to lose a $765 million player.
But before we praise their great winter rally, let's briefly consider how they lost the great Juan Soto to his former brothers eight and a half miles to the southeast. Make no mistake, it was an intra-city upset for the ages.
Not only did the Yankees not expect to bid $760 million, they certainly didn't expect to lose him to the Mets. Naturally, at first they assumed that it was the gold that sold Soto, and said so. But after weeks of new information and updated self-reflection, I think they understand now.
Soto didn't come up with an additional $5 million, which represents an increase of 0.6 percent (an amount the Yankees almost certainly wouldn't have matched had they had the chance) — not to mention Steve Cohen's. The willingness to spend, and the willingness to continue spending, is hurt, even though it wasn't. Soto left primarily for his family.
