Yankees lose Ian Hamilton for rest of postseason after calf injury

CLEVELAND — The Yankees lost Ian Hamilton for the remainder of the playoffs, and Mark Leiter Jr. joined the ALCS roster on Friday.

Hamilton injured his calf while fielding first base in Game 3 on Thursday and was removed from the Yankees' roster.

The reliever said he was about to make a warm-up pitch when he felt a grip in his calf, at which point he left the game with his trainer and was scheduled to undergo imaging tests on Friday.

Hamilton will not be eligible to play in the World Series if the Yankees advance to the World Series because the Yankees have him on the roster instead.

Leiter was traded by the Cubs at the deadline and was left off the ALDS and ALCS rosters after struggling down the stretch.

The right-handed pitcher posted a 4.98 ERA in 21 games with the Yankees, allowing six home runs in 21 2/3 innings. He could whiff, but was frequently injured by extra-base hits.

The injury marks the end of a frustrating season for Hamilton, who also missed nearly three months of the regular season with a latissimus dorsi strain.
