Yankees Secure Win Against Mariners in 2026 Season Opener

The New York Yankees have kicked off the 2026 season with impressive pitching, continuing that trend on Wednesday night by beating the Seattle Mariners 5-3.

Cam Schlitler encountered some challenges during the game but still managed a solid performance. He pitched 6.1 innings, giving up just two hits and notching seven strikeouts. The Mariners only managed to score against New York’s bullpen, with Cal Raleigh bringing in two RBIs and Dominick Carzone contributing one more.

Through the first six games this season, the Yankees have shown remarkable defensive strength. They’ve allowed just six runs, making it one of the lowest totals in MLB history for this stretch, according to MLB researcher Sarah Langs. Only the 2002 San Francisco Giants and 1915 Philadelphia Phillies have matched or done better in this regard.

Schlitler mentioned that he relies primarily on three pitches: a four-seamer, cutter, and sinker. “I started with the four-seam, then the two-seam as the game went on, and finished with a cutter,” he explained. “I felt confident sticking to this game plan.”

The Yankees are also managing well despite not having their full roster. Key players Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are still on the injured list. Schlitler expressed optimism about the team’s depth, saying, “I think this staff has the upper hand. The bullpen was fantastic, and as a team, we just motivate each other.”

This match marked a significant moment for the Yankees, as they prepare to return home. They’ll host the Miami Marlins in their home opener on Friday.
