Yankees Make Dramatic Comeback Against Mariners
The Yankees pulled off their biggest comeback of the season, aided by unexpected circumstances.
Seattle catcher Cal Laurie mentioned that Mariners closer Andre Munoz seemed to struggle with his pitching mechanics in the bottom of the ninth. This misstep allowed the Yankees to rally, ultimately winning the game 6-5 in extra innings.
“He would lean to one side every time there were two runners on base,” Laurie noted.
In fact, video footage revealed a Yankee base runner gesturing during a crucial moment, just as Munoz was preparing to throw a slider.
It resulted in a full count for Ben Rice, who watched sliders sail well outside the strike zone, which loaded the bases for Austin Wells.
Laurie commented on the Yankees’ keen alertness, saying, “Clearly, they capitalized on that. It’s just part of the game. We should have anticipated it during the series.” He acknowledged that the Yankees made it quite challenging.
Interestingly, Laurie didn’t share his thoughts with Munoz about this behavior during the crucial innings. “You want to do your best not to distract him from focusing on the batter,” he remarked. That might be something to keep in mind in upcoming games.
Meanwhile, Seattle manager Dan Wilson disagreed with Laurie’s interpretation of the situation. “I don’t think that was the case,” he stated.
It all unfolded during a tough stretch for both Seattle and Munoz. Not only did Laurie miss what seemed like a clear third strike on Munoz’s changeup to Wells, but he also failed to tag Anthony Volpe when he slid around him on Aaron Judge’s hit.
