Yankees prospect Spencer Jones starts with Double A Somerset and he has new wood to launch.
The Yankees' Prospect Pool's No. 3 lead told reporters on Tuesday that they'll use torpedo bats when minor league season begins later this week.
The outfielder joined the big league brothers using the bat that made headlines since the Bronx bombers reached their nickname over the weekend, hitting nine home runs in a blown victory over the brewers on Saturday and a total of 15 wins over the weekend.
The 6-foot-7 Jones received one during spring training and said he was “pretty excited” to have it.
“They showed me where my barrel is like the 20th percentile of the barrel size of a bat. That's why I use bats with small barrels when I can maximize it,” Jones said. “It's obvious I'll use a bigger barrel.”
Jones added that he has been using “about a week,” suggesting that he has noticed a difference in hits since he started using the torpedo bat.
“A little. There were some balls I felt stuck and it was a lot of barrels. It's a good feeling. It doesn't hurt your hands. It's actually flying off the barrel,” Jones said.
Jones jumped to Double A in the second half of the 2023 season, spending the entire 2024 baseball season in Somerset, cutting .259/.336/.452 and 17 home runs and 78 RBI.
Jones worked on adjusting his swing and batting stance during the offseason. He said his goal is to “see more contact, see better pitch, make better decisions and hit the ball in the air a little bit.” [more]. ”
