It all began with a pop, and then the rest followed.
The Yankees are eager for Anthony Volpe to return from the injured list. He woke up Sunday with pain and discomfort in his left shoulder after getting hurt while diving on Saturday. However, Aaron Boone mentioned some “good news” following his MRI and X-ray.
“It’s painful today, but I think he’s in a decent spot,” Boone said Sunday morning. “It’s something we have to monitor daily.”
“This is definitely encouraging news,” he added.
Boone hoped Volpe could hit the batting cage to test his shoulder strength later that day. In the meantime, Oswald Peraza stepped in as the shortstop for Sunday’s finale against the Rays.
Boone noted that the MRI indicated “old” findings in Volpe’s shoulder, but fortunately nothing new required him to go on the injured list right away.
“We’re hopeful everything is okay, but we’ll see how things play out today and in the coming days,” Boone said.
This season, Volpe has started all 33 games for the Yankees prior to Sunday. Last season, he played 158 out of 162 games, and in his rookie year in 2023, he was in the lineup for 150 games.
