SAN DIEGO — Nick Burdy’s hip issue has recurred just five games after returning from the injured list.
Vardy was placed back on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with right hip inflammation, the same injury that sidelined him for about a month earlier this season.
The Yankees recalled right-hander Yoendrys Gomez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead of their series opener against the Padres at Petco Park.

Vardy returned from the disabled list on May 10 and has pitched in five games, most recently 1/3 of an inning against the Mariners on Thursday.
The 31-year-old relief pitcher has a 1.86 ERA in 12 games this season but will be on the IL for the second time before Memorial Day.
Before signing with the Yankees this offseason, Vardy’s career was hampered by a series of arm injuries and now he’s having back problems.
By bringing back Gomez, the Yankees have protected their bullpen as they begin a West Coast road trip with nine games in 10 days.
Gomez started for Triple-A and threw 72 pitches over four innings on Sunday.

The 24-year-old, who made his MLB debut as a relief pitcher last September, has also been plagued by injuries throughout his career.
