BOSTON — What should have been the catch of the year ended up as a home run for Oswaldo Cabrera.
In the top of the second inning of an eventful game at Fenway Park on Saturday, Cabrera hit a fastball from Cutter Crawford into deep right field.
Boston’s Willy Abreu sprinted, slowed at the warning track, took a leap and used his momentum to send him over the short wall and tumble into the stands.
Abreu made a run at the ball but ended up not catching it.
The ball stayed in his glove but, in football terms, never crossed the ground.
Abreu was on his back, the ball fell out of his glove, the Yankees were up 4-3 at this point, and Boston was in for a scare.
The Red Sox checked on Abreu for a few minutes after a play that could have been much worse — he could have landed differently and suffered back and neck issues — but the 25-year-old remained in the game.
In a game that had many twists and turns, Boston led 5-4 after the fourth inning.
